James Poindexter DRANE Jr.

DRANE, JR, James Poindexter,.age 80, passed away on November 14, 2013. surrounded by his loving family. Jim was born at University Hospital, in Charlottesville, Virginia on Oct. 17, 1933. After living in Virginia for three years they moved to Atlanta, and then to Sebring in 1944. He graduated from Sebring High School in 1951. He then went to the University of Florida and graduated with a BSA in 1955, majoring in Citrus Production. While at the University he was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity. In 1958 he moved to Orlando. Jim was a Citrus Grower and worked in the Fertilizer and Agrichemical Industries from 1958 until retiring from Vicksburg Chemical Co. In 2000. He was active in the Florida Fertilizer and Agrichemical Association until retirement. Jim was a member of a prominent Polk County Citrus Family started by his Grandfather at the turn of the century. Jim's greatest passion was his love of Florida football and his family. He has been a member of Gator Boosters since 1962. He is a Past President of the Gator Club of Central Florida and was an honorary regional Vice President of the Alumni Association for one year. He also was very active in Gator Feeders formed by friends from Orlando, Tom Ustler of Orlando, the late Karick Price and K. D. Lewis. All shared many memories over 26 years barbecuing yearly for the Florida Football team and coaches after the Orange and Blue game. Jim was very active with the Touchdown Club of Orlando. He served in many ways and was also President in 1987-88. Jim was a life long Presbyterian and moved his letter of affiliation from the First Presbyterian Church of Sebring in Nov. 1958 to the First Presbyterian Church of Orlando and is currently affiliated with the First Presbyterian Church of Frostproof, FL. After graduation from The University of Florida, Jim served in the United States Army, attached to the American Embassy in Paris, France for 18 months. Jim has always been extremely proud of his family history. His Drane ancestors came from Staffordshire, England in the 1630s, settling in Maryland before settling to other parts of the country. On his maternal side he is a direct decendent of the Mayflower. Jim is preceded in death by his parents Naomi Griffin Drane and James P. Drane of Sebring. He is survived by his beloved children, Sarah Anne Drane Hanks of Orlando, Catherine Drane Albert (Paul) of Simpsonville, South Carolina, James P. Drane, III of Orlando and Susan Drane Somerville of Orlando. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren, Madison Albert of Simpsonville, SC, Hunter Hanks, Jordan Hanks, Katie Grace Hanks, Hayden Somerville and Colton Somerville all of Orlando. Funeral Services will be held Monday, November 18, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. In the Chapel at First Presbyterian Church of Orlando located at Church and Magnolia Streets, with Kent Sterchi officiating. The family will receive friends at the Chapel one hour prior to the service. Graveside services will be on Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at 2:00 p.m at Pinecrest Cemetery in Sebring with Military Rites by VFW Post 4300 of Sebring. Memorials may be made to or .
