POTTS, Joe A., passed away at his home in Plant City, FL on Aug. 3, 2013 after an extended illness. He was just five days short of celebrating his 90th birthday. He is survived by his loving family; his wife, Iris; a daughter, Joanne Potts; a son, David Potts; a grandson, Evan Potts; and Joe's sister, Mary Hiers and her husband, Douglas. He was born in Lincolnton, NC on Aug. 8, 1923. After being discharged from the army, he moved to Tampa, FL in 1946 where he met Iris, his wife of 64 years. They lived in Tampa until retiring to Plant City, FL in 1987. During WWII, he served as a paratrooper, assigned to the 101st airbourne. He was awarded the Purple Heart for being wounded on Jan. 10, 1945 during the Battle of the Bulge at Bastogne, Belgium. Also, during the Battle of the Bulge, he earned the Silver Star Medal for single-handedly, destroying a German machine gun nest, saving his platoon which had been pinned down. He was also awarded many other medals, including the Bronze Star. He was owner of Mutual Finance Co. and B&P Insurors, along with several other companies involving construction and real estate holdings. Joe was a member of Palma Cera Golf and Country Club for 57 years. He was a past member of the Tampa Club, Krewe of Venus, Kiwanis Club, and Chairman of the Board of the Small Loan Association. Joe was also of the Baptist faith. He was a quiet man with strength of character and gentle ways. He was also, an adoring husband, father and grandfather who would do anything for his family. Military funeral services were held on Aug. 7, 2013 at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL.
