SIERRA, Josephine Spoto, 89 of Tampa, was born on February 8, 1924 and passed away May 18,2013. Josie graduated from Hills-borough High School in 1943 and entered the work force during World War II. She had a long, varied career and retired as a social worker serving the welfare of migrant children. Although we will miss her greatly, those whose lives she touched will forever be filled with her love, sense of humor, joy of life and ability to make you feel good and happier just by being around her. Her passion in life was her family and ensuring that they always stayed together and honored and remembered their Sicilian heritage. God help us if we did not come for pasta with succo at 2pm on Sundays! She experienced the full range of life's highs and lows. Through it all, Mom maintained and imparted to us her strength, courage, perseverance, integrity and humor. Even as the end approached, she held fast to these qualities and once again showed us not only how to face life, but also how to face death. Josie was predeceased by her parents, Giovanni Spoto and Maria Cacciatore Spoto; her brother Paul C. Spoto; and her son, John Michael Sierra. She is survived by her son, Paul J. Sierra (Elise) and daughter Joyce Sierra; grandchildren Gina Sierra-Townsend (John), Jana Sierra Pullo (Robert), Paul Joseph "PJ" Sierra, Adrienne Timmel (Alexander Engelman), and Lia Timmel; great-grandchildren Dominic, Giovanna and Gianni. The family wishes to thank all those who visited, helped and prayed for Mom during her brief hospital stay. Karen, Linda and Susan - we are especially and eternally grateful for your presence, care and invaluable medical guidance. The family will receive friends Thursday, May 23, 2013 between 12:00 noon and 2 p.m, at Boza & Roel Funeral Home, 4730 N. Armenia Ave., Tampa, Florida. Chapel services will commence at 2 p.m. and entombment will follow at L'Unione Italiana Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 3712 West El Prado Boulevard, Tampa, FL 33629 or the Krewe of Sant' Yago Education Foundation, 1615 Hacienda Court, Tampa, FL 33605. Acknowledging that not all can attend the services, the family wishes to invite family and friends to Joyce's home after the funeral services to celebrate Josie's life.
