Marjorie ARNADE

ARNADE, Marjorie, age 83, passed away on Nov. 4, 2012 in Wilmington, North Carolina, where she moved briefly to be closer to family. Born Marjorie McLain on a farm outside Tecumseh Michigan on October 30, 1929 amid the onset of the Great Depression and the Stock Market Crash, she later moved to Detroit, where her mother taught high school and where she graduated valedictorian of her class. She married Charles Arnade, whom she met at the University of Michigan, and earned a B.S. in medical technology. After living in Michigan and Bolivia, the family settled in Florida, first in Gainesville, and then in the small central Florida town of San Antonio, where she lived for fifty years. She had seven children, after several decades raising them, she returned to work as a medical librarian after receiving her Master of Library Science at the University of South Florida. She became an avid runner, winning a number of trophies. She was deeply committed to public causes, including the civil rights movement in the 1960's. She was a model of patience, good humor, pragmatism and tolerance as she managed a large family, a career, a far flung travel schedule, and a revolving door of visitors. She became the consummate international expert, able to navigate the globe with cosmopolitan ease while never forgetting her country roots. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles; and her son, Stephen. She is survived by sons, Frank, Carlos (Tony), Tim, Peter and Christopher; daughter Jeanette Pollock; adopted daughter, Aida Schipani; niece, Sylvia McLain; nephew, David McLain; cousin, Julie Blackburn; fourteen grandchildren; and a soon to be born great-grandchild. She was an inspiration to her family and friends and will be greatly missed by her children and grandchildren.
