ST. PETERSBURG -- Family members traveled to Dover Air Force Base Sunday to collect the body of Army Spc. Brittany Gordon, a soldier from St. Petersburg who was killed while serving in Afghanistan.

Gordon, the daughter of St. Petersburg Assistant Police Chief Cedric Gordon, died days after celebrating her 24th birthday.

Pentagon officials said she is the first female soldier from the Tampa Bay area and one of only 45 overall to die in Operation Enduring Freedom.

Officials have yet to release how Gordon died.

Gordon, who graduated from St. Petersburg High School six years ago, planned to go to college after finishing her tour of duty, said Robert Stewart, a neighbor of her family who talked with Gordon when she was home on leave about five months ago.
