BALLAS, Lowell "Blackie", 73, of Lake Placid, went to be with his Lord Jesus Christ who he loved with all his heart on Tuesday morning, February 12, 2013 at the Florida Hospital Lake Placid. He was born on January 25, 1940 in Brooklyn, NY to parents Jessie and Abe Ballas. He served his country in the US Marine Corp during Vietnam. He was a retired Firefighter with the City of Miami Fire Department with 36 years of service. Blackie was the founder of the "Florida Firefighter Games" in 1972, the Chairman and co-chairman of the Miami Edison Over- the Hill Gang. Moving to Lake Placid 10 years ago, he served on the Highlands County Parks and Recreation Committee. Blackie is survived by his loving wife of nine and half years, Susan Tracey-Ballas; sons, Timothy Waterhouse, Mark Waterhouse and Jonathan Ballas; two step-daughters; 4 grandchildren; and 4 step-grandchildren. A service to celebrate Blackie's life will be held 1:30 PM Saturday March 30, 2013 at the Miami Fire Fighters Benevolent Association Hall 2980 NW South River Drive, Miami.
