ALLEN, Mary Josephine, "Jo," to her friends and family, was born January 24, 1919. She came of age as a child of the Great Depression, and was a contributing member of what we have come to call the Greatest Generation. She married Horace Allen in 1942, and was able to introduce him to their 18-month-old son, Kenneth, upon his return from World War II in 1944. The family, by then including a 3-year old daughter, Linda Jean, moved to Florida from her native Pennsylvania in 1950. She later, with characteristic generosity of heart, adopted a son, James Edward (since deceased) who had been abused and neglected by his birth parents. She raised her children with great attention, responsibility and love. She worked, for a time as head nurse, at Jackson Memorial hospital in Dade City, then at Sunland Training Center in Gainesville Florida, as she supported Horace's education at the University of Florida, then for many years as the nurse for Dr. Walter Reilly in Zephyrhills. She was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church of Dade City, and sang in its choir for 60 years. Until the last year of her life she was a woman of remarkable vitality, and even during the months of her unavoidable and terminal decline amazed all who knew her with her loving and indomitable spirit. She is survived by her son, Ken, her daughter Linda, a virtual son, Mark Hughes who enabled her to stay in her beloved home as she negotiated the years of widowhood and advanced age, and by all who hold hope for more loving people to populate the earth. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, August 2, 2013, 2pm, at the 1st Presbyterian Church of Dade City. Interment will follow the service at Floral Memory Gardens, Dade City, FL. Immediately following the graveside service, a reception will be held at the church for all who attend. Flowers are greatly appreciated or donations to HPH Hospice. www.HPH-Hospice.org
