WOODS, Paul F., of Plant City, was born on a day many consider unlucky, a Friday the 13th in December 1918. But when he died at the age of 95, on January 10, 2014, anyone who knew him would say he had led a Blessed life. He was known for his love for his Lord, his family, his country and the Florida Gators. Paul was born In Worcester, Massachusetts to Eugene and Blanche Sullivan Woods. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years Paula Tershansy Woods, his parents, step-father Roger Kavanaugh and brothers, Eugene T. Woods and Roger Kavanaugh. Paul is survived by son, Paul D. (Barbara) Woods, daughters, Pamela (Dave) Sarich and Patricia (Bob) Mondoux; 11 grandchildren Shannon Simmons, Kellie, Kasey and Jacob Woods, Alexandra and Nicholas Sarich, Bobby, Zachary, Tyler, Hailie, and Kinslie Mondoux; nieces Joanne LaPoma and Alani Kroeger; nephew John Horvath; and his extended family of Emeritus at Oakbridge. A courageous soldier, Paul enlisted in the U.S. Army shortly before the outbreak of WWII, and saw combat in the Pacific theatre. He was recalled from reserve service for the Korean War, where he again served in combat. By the time the conflicts had ended he had earned a Purple Heart, a Bronze Star and had risen to the rank of captain. It was during WWII, at Camp Blanding in Florida, that he met his future bride, Army Nurse Lt. Paula Tershansy. Between and after wars, he earned his Bachelor's Degree in Education from Florida Southern College and his Master's Degree in Education from the University of Florida. Over the course of more than three decades, he helped shape the educations of thousands of eastern Hillsborough County children, serving as a principal Dover, Robinson, and Cork Elementary Schools. Paul was very involved in St. Clement Catholic Church and the Plant City community as a member of the St. Clement's Make Your Own Strawberry Shortcake Committee, the Knights of Columbus, Hillsborough County Principal's Association, Florida Education Association and the Plant City Planning Board, among others. A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, January 16 at 3:30 PM at St. Clement Catholic Church, located at 1104 North Alexander Street Plant City, Florida 33563. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
