KING, Robert Rutledge, Jr., 94, most beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, died, April 9, 2013 at his home in Avon Park, FL. Bob was born with identical twin brother Richard Woodward King in Anderson, South Carolina on January 15, 1919 to Robert and Ellie King. The Kings were hotel owners in Anderson, South Carolina and Avon Park, Florida. In 1925, Bob's parents started King's Inn in Highlands, North Carolina. The King family spent summers there and Highlands continues to be a place where the entire family enjoys family reunions. He attended Riverside Military Academy and the University of Florida, where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega and completed Reserved Officers Training Corp and entered the US Army as 2nd Lieutenant. During WWII, Bob served as a Captain in the United States Army. He moved to Avon Park in 1946 when he acquired the Jacaranda Hotel, during this time he also managed the Pinecrest Hotel and Resort on Lake Lotela. He left the hotel business in 1954 and spent the remainder of his life enjoying his real estate career. Bob was an innovative thinker, developing subdivisions and condominiums in the Avon Park area. Throughout his life Bob remained a contributor and developer within his community. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Mariana Barrett Bush King, his identical twin brother, Richard King of Atlanta, Georgia and his sisters, Betty King Trowbridge and Mahalie King Brown of Anderson, South Carolina. He is survived by his four children: daughter, Mary King Sullivan; daughter, Ann King Milton; son, Robert Rutledge King, III and wife Janet; and daughter, Elizabeth King Kanan; fourteen grandchildren; twenty-three great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Bob remained ageless in his passion for golf - an avid player and follower. Bob's playful sense of humor and joy in life inspired all, from his love of watching birds on the lake to teaching his grandchildren to drive his 1940s tractor. A kind and gentle man, Bob was the epitome of a southern gentleman and will be missed by family, friends and community. He will be remembered for being a man of grace and charm. A graveside service will be held Friday, April 12, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at Bougainvillea Cemetery, Avon Park, FL. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bob's memory to the Historical Society of Avon Park, Avon Park, Florida or the Highlands Historical Society in Highlands, North Carolina.
