HANSEN, Roy Allen, 76, passed peacefully at home Monday, March 11, 2013. Born in Hoboken, New Jersey, on December 14, 1936, to Haakon and Anna Hansen, Roy grew up in the Santa Barbara, California area and received his Ph.D. degree from UCLA. After launching his academic career at UC Berkeley, he taught sociology at USF for 35 years before retiring to work in litigation research. A true scholar whose main passion in life was reading and studying, Roy was known for his great mind and original ideas. His college classes were engaging, challenging, and sometimes controversial because of his not bowing to either conventional wisdom or "political correctness." Roy lived a private life, preferring to spend most of his time with his family and closest friends. He had a subtle and powerful way of enhancing the lives of those he loved by truly listening and caring, humbly teaching, and lending support when needed. He was an original who will never be replaced. He lives on in our minds and hearts. He is survived by his wife, Diane; brother, Art; and sister-in-law, Deb; daughters, Karen and Gail; sons, Mark and Haakon; grandchildren, Michelle, Elizabeth, Nick, and Autumn; and great-grandchildren, Maia, Hyland, Ameliah, Blake, Micah, and Carly.
