WHITTEN, Virgil Edward (Buddy), age 86, born to Horace T. and Lorena (Hall) Whitten (both deceased) in Thonoto-sassa, FL, passed away June 19, 2014 in Blairsville, GA. At the age of 9, his parents moved the family to Tampa. While attending Hillsborough High School, we was a captain in the ROTC Rifle Squad. Upon graduation, like so many other young men, he joined the U.S. Army becoming a para-trooper making 17 success-ful jumps over Tokyo during the occupation. When Buddy returned home he began his career with the USPS and recently received his 60+ year pin as a mem-ber of #599 Postal Union. Buddy is predeceased by his son, Randy, as well as a nephew, Dennis Messer. Survived by his wife of 66 years, Edythe D. Whitten; sister, Rosa Margaret (BN) Messer. He is also survived by two nephews, Donald and Adam Messer; and one niece, Andrea Messer. His cousins, Harlan Whitten, Geneva Faust, Reba Meyer, Ronald Hasty, Jimmy, Ann and Sonny Collins survive him along with other relatives and friends. A memorial service will be held at Landmark Baptist Church, 6021 Williams Road, Seffner Florida on Tuesday July 8th beginning at 11:30 am . Visitation will follow the service in the church's Fellowship Hall. Private interment will take place where Buddy will be laid to rest next to his son, Randy.
