ESSRIG, Cecile Waterman, 89, of Tampa, passed away June 29, 2012. She was born in Tampa to the late Daisy G. and Jerome A. Water-man, and she attended Gorrie Elementary, Wilson Middle School, and Plant High. She graduated from Sweet Briar College and attended graduate school at the University of Pennsylvania. She served on the Hillsborough County School Board for 21 years, having been elected in 1967. She was the first woman elected to a major political office in Hillsborough County. She helped lead the school system and this community through many turbulent periods. While on the School Board, she created the Tampa/Hillsborough County Youth Council, to give students a direct voice to the school board. Cecile was active in many civic and community activities, including service on the boards of the Hillsborough County Council of PTA's, the Daisy G. Waterman Lighthouse for the Blind, the Suncoast Girl Scout Council, DACCO, the Children's Home, the American Cancer Society, the Tampa Oral School for the Deaf, and the Tampa Museum of Art. She was the recipient of a number of awards and honors, including the Silver Medallion Award from the National Conference of Christians and Jews; the Hannah G. Solomon Award from the National Council of Jewish Women; the City of Tampa Office of Community Relations Human Rights Award; and inclusion in the charter class of the Hillsborough County Women's Hall of Fame. She was predeceased by her husband, Marvin E. Essrig; her daughter, Daisy Lynn Essrig; and her son, Marvin Jerome "Doc" Essrig. She is survived by her two daughters, Cecile Lee and Katherine (Kevin Napper); her granddaughter, Emma Napper; her sister, Regena Bragin (Stephen); and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 5th, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at Blount & Curry Funeral Home, 605 S. MacDill Ave., Tampa, FL 33609.
