ABEL, Ernest Walter "Mike," 80 of Sebring, Fla. passed away on Jan. 6, 2013 at Florida Hospital Heartland in Sebring. Mr. Abel was born on Nov. 3, 1932 to his parents Carl and Elsa Abel in Providence, RI. He retired as a Lieutenant Commander serving in the U.S. Navy during the Korean and Vietnam eras with 27 years of service as a Submarine Weapons Officer. He then worked 13 years for Analysis and Technology as a Nuclear Weapons Inspector. He has resided in Sebring for eight years moving from Cape Coral. Mike was a member of the Elks Lodge #2596, Cape Coral, serving as Exalted Ruler 1999-2000. He was a member of the Elks Lodge and Moose Lodge of Sebring and a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4300, where he served on the Honor Guard. Additional memberships included the American Legion, DAV Commanders club, USS Sea Owl Assoc., Barb Base, MOAA, and The U.S. Navy Memorial Foundation. Mr. Abel is survived by his loving wife of 18 years: Joyce Abel; a daughter: Betsy Abel, a son: David Wildfield and wife Jennifer Mannebach, of IL; a daughter: Kimberly Leonardo and husband Keith, of FL; a brother Alfred Abel and wife Sandy of Summerville, SC; two sisters: Elsa Field of Pawtucket, RI, and Gertrude Box of RI; four grandchildren: Craig Leonardo, Christian Leonardo, Ursula Wildfield and Vivian Wildfield. He was preceded in death by his son Michael Abel. A Service with Military Honors will be held graveside, on Sat. Jan. 12, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. at Lakeview Memorial Gardens, 854 Memorial Dr., Avon Park, FL. Following this will be a Celebration of Life Memorial at VFW Post #4300, 2011 S.E. Lakeview Dr., Sebring. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the VFW Post #4300 Honor Guard.
