SABA, George Nelson, 82, passed away on December 6, 2012. A lifelong resident of Tampa, he was born December 1, 1930 to the late George and Emma Saba. His survivors include his loving wife, Betty; daughters, Karen Simmons of Tampa and Janis Dupre (Bill) of Cary, NC; sister, Shirley Ann Saba of Tampa. Nelson graduated in 1948 from Hillsborough High School, where he received the coveted American Legion Award. He then attended The University of Florida, earning a BS degree in Business Administration and becoming an avid Gator fan. He and Betty were married on June 1, 1952, after meeting on a blind date two years earlier. Nelson's professional life included 34 years with Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. and 10 years with the National Guard. In 1978, he was chosen president of the Metropolitan Life Veterans Association for the state of Florida. Among his civic duties, Nelson served 8 years on the Hillsborough County Library Board and 9 years on the City of Tampa Recreation Board. Besides his family, two of Nelson's passions were running and tennis. He was a charter member of the Tampa Bay Track Club and a regular fixture on the Bay Area's tennis courts. Nelson was grateful to his family and friends for their support and devotion through the years. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, December 11, 2012, at 1:00 PM at Myrtle Hill Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to LifePath Hospice, 12973 N.
