GONZALEZ, Josephine G., Tampa, FL - Josephine, age 87, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 22. She was born March 16, 1926 in Ybor City to the late, Ramon and Maria Garcia, immigrants of Asturias, Spain. She was extremely proud of her Spanish heritage. She graduated from OLPH and had the opportunity to attend college, but decided to go directly into the workforce. She worked as a Bookkeeper for Perfecto Garcia & Bros for 28 years then went to work for Hillsborough County in Purchasing, where she was affectionately known as the "Contessa", until she retired at the age of 76. Living in the Ybor community helped her become trilingual, speaking English, Spanish and Italian fluently. When she retired, her desire was to write some stories about her childhood in Ybor City of how it used to be, a community of tight net families of strong, independent and proud Spanish, Cuban and Italian immigrants. She did achieve her main goal, which was to take a trip to Asturias, Spain to visit her parent's homeland and her relatives. Her hobbies were sewing, crocheting, and above all else reading. She loved her family and especially adored her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was extremely social, loved to go out with her friends and spend time in her later years at the senior center. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Gonzalez, and her brother, Elias (Tony) Garcia. She is survived by her son, William (Raymond) Gonzalez, daughter, Mary Gonzalez Castles, two grandchildren, Michelle Blackwell and Frank Pille, four great grandchildren, Ashley Mullis, Rebekah and Autumn Simpson and Mercedes Pille. Many thanks to those at Accentia and Hospice. Your compassion and kindness was sincerely appreciated. Services will be held at OLPH Church on Saturday, November 2nd. The family will receive friends from 10am-11am with a memorial mass afterwards. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to the Lewy Body Dementia Assoc., www.lbda.org tribute gift.
