CREWS, Mary Jo of Temple Terrace, Florida died peacefully in her home on January 2, 2013. Mary Jo, 94, who wore her age with dignity and high spirits, was born May 5, 1918 in Williamson, Georgia to Theressa Coggins Jackson Crawford and Joseph Jackson. When Mary Jo was age three, the family moved to Bradenton, Florida where she graduated from Manatee High School in 1936 and then went on to become a Registered Nurse upon graduating from Gordon Keller School of Nursing in Tampa in 1939. That same year she received the honor of being selected as the first Flight Attendant for American Airlines from the state of Florida, placing her on the cutting edge of careers for women in her time. After three years of flying with American, she married John (Jack) Thomas Harrison Berry. They lived in Philadelphia, Penn. for eighteen years where they raised their two daughters, Sandy Berry Bjerke Skrien and Sally Berry Spencer Sullivan. After Jack's death in 1960, Mary Jo and Sandy relocated to Bradenton where Mary Jo reentered the work force, this time, as an RN. Thirteen years later she married her former childhood sweetheart, William B. (Tubby) Crews of Tampa with whom she celebrated a love-filled 35 years of marriage. For 33 of those years, the couple enjoyed relaxing and entertaining six months of each year in Highlands, North Carolina. Mary Jo was known as the consummate hostess with a contagious joie de vivre. Preceding her in death was her first husband Jack; her mother, Theressa; her step-daughter, Sally; her sister, Opal Cavalier; and lastly, her recently deceased husband Tubby for all of whom she was a guardian angel as a dedicated, loving and compassionate care giver.
