MARLOW, Mary Gwin Peoples, of Lake Placid, Fla., died early Tuesday morning January 28, 2014. Mary was 92. She was born in Alabama, December 18, 1921, daughter of Ms. Dovie Sandlin and Mault Gwin of Yolande. Mary graduated from the University of Alabama with a nursing degree. She entered the US Army and was attached with the US Army Nursing Corp. After Mary was discharged she settled in Birmingham, Ala., and later in Coral Gables, Fla. where she continued her nursing profession. In 1955, Mary came to Lake Placid and worked as a nurse and assisted her husband at the Lake Placid Insurance Company. Her and her husband were very active in the community. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, American Legion, (Past Commander), and the Jr. Women's Club. Mary loved to cook, enjoyed golfing, and playing Bridge. She was an avid Alabama football fan. Mary is survived by her children, Roy J. Peoples Jr., Mary Alice Shackelford, step-son Darel Smith; grandchildren, Lindsey and Casey and she was blessed with 4 great grandchildren. She also leaves her nephews and niece, Robert A. and Alvin E., Gwin, Henry Kelly, Betty June Doster and her companion Keith Buntin. Mary was predeceased by her husbands, Roy Peoples and Richard Marlow. In celebration of her life a memorial service will begin at 12:30 p.m. Saturday February 1, 2014 at the Lake Placid American Legion with military honors presented by the American Legion Color Guard. In lieu of flowers contributions may be sent to the Sebring Veterans Affair Office for the helping of the needy veterans program. Memorial arrangements are under the loving devotion of MICHAEL A.
