BARBER, Ruth Ann, 67, of Tampa, passed away peacefully at Kindred Hospital in Tampa on March 31, 2014, from complica-tions due to kidney failure. Ruth Ann was born in 1946 in Lorain, Ohio, and grew up in Evans City, Pennsylvania. In 1963, she and her family moved to Tampa, in time for her to graduate from Chamberlain High School in 1964. In 1964, she accepted a position at FBI Head-quarters in Washington, D.C., where she stayed until 1967, working in the FBI's National Security Division and for FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover. She returned to Tampa and worked in the Chemistry Department at the University of South Florida, until she decided to rejoin the FBI in 1969. She worked in a variety of positions with the FBI until her retirement in 2006, after a cumulative forty years with the FBI, helping protect the national security of the United States. During her forty years of dedicated service, she personally met every FBI Director. Ruth Ann had numerous interests outside work, especially Barry Manilow and baseball. Ruth Ann helped organize a local Barry Manilow fan club, and she traveled throughout the country attending concerts, on several occasions even meeting him personally. She was a long-time fan of the New York Yankees and the Tampa Bay Rays. She said she may have been the only Tampa resident to have attended two perfect games at Yankee Stadium, pitched by David Wells on May 17, 1998, and by David Cone on July 18, 1999. Even though she had to arrive in a wheelchair the last two years, she never gave up watching Rays games, in person when she could and the rest on television. Ruth Ann was predeceased by her parents, Lydia and Bill Barber. She is survived by a sister, Melissa Barber Nicholson (Tom), and a brother, Bill Barber (Becky), a beloved aunt, Ruth-Ellen Sands, all of Tampa, and her FBI family, including long-time friend Van Magers, also of Tampa. Her family said that in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to the or to the . Final arrangements are being handled by Blount & Curry.
