MCANDREW, Thomas J., Beloved father, grandfather, friend and dedicated community volunteer passed away May 10, 2013 at his residence in South Tampa at the age of 82. Born and raised in Bradford Pennsylvania, Tom traveled throughout the country and overseas after being drafted by the Army First Cavalry Division in Korea. Later as an Army aviator he served two tours in Vietnam flying Huey helicopters. During his military career he was awarded the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, and numerous other citations and awards. After a twenty year distinguished career with the Army, Tom retired as Lieutenant Colonel. Tom eventually retired to Tampa where he volunteered much of his time on MacDill AFB at the Optometry Clinic, Fitness Center, Library and Thrift Shop. He also volunteered at Meals on Wheels and annually at the TPC Tampa ProAm. Throughout his life Tom loved competing in sports including baseball, basketball, bowling, ping pong, shooting pool, racquetball, golf and a good card game. He loved to read, do crossword puzzles and Sudoku to keep his mind sharp. He also enjoyed listening to music and often shared his interest by creating CDs for many friends. He is survived by his daughters, Teresa M. Miller and husband Ashley of South Tampa, Patricia J. McAndrew of Atlanta, Georgia and Mary Elizabeth McAndrew of Portland, Oregon, and their mother Rita G. McAndrew; grandsons, Daniel Paul Miller, Patrick C. Miller and Michael Thomas Miller. Tom will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery Wednesday, July 10, 2013 at 9:00am with full military honors. Arrangements By Brewer & Sons Funeral Home S. Tampa 33.28 S. Dale Mabry Hwy.
