Woody YORK Obituary

YORK, Woody Neil, MD, a pioneering Tampa physician and surgeon who served as former chief of staff at Tampa General Hospital and who performed Tampa's first kidney transplant, passed away peacefully on Jan. 2, with his beloved wife Jackie at his side. He is also survived by his children, Kathleen Loring York Mooney, Kelly Carter York Shiver, (Kelly J, Shiver) and Woody Todd York (Kendra Harrington); grandchildren Morgan York Mooney, Dana Mooney, Hunter York Shiver, Kennedy Carter Shiver, Mick Russell, SaraJeanne Russell, Evelyn Herrington York' sister-in-law Jane Carter Neill; and many nieces and nephews from the York, Carter-Neill and Flynn-Belden families. Dr. York graduated from Wichita Falls High school in Texas, and was president of his class all three years. He then earned a bachelor of science degree from Tulane University, where he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity and Phi Chi medical fraternity. He completed his medical internship at Henry Ford hospital in Detroit, then came to Tampa in 1960 for a one-year general surgery residency at Tampa General. After that year, he joined the Navy and for a year and half, during the Vietnam War he served as medical officer on the guided missile cruiser USS Topeka. He finished his military service as senior medical officer for the Air Technical Training Unit at Jacksonville Naval Station. In 1962 he returned to Tampa and completed a three-and-a-half-year residency training program at Tampa General, then entered private practice with Dr. Linus W. Hewit. Dr. Bruce Crowel joined the practice later. Dr. York was a member of the medical staffs of Tampa General, Memorial, St. Joseph's and St. Joseph's Women's hospitals, and served as consulting physician for the James A. Haley and Bay Pines Veterans Administration hospitals. He became chief of staff of Tampa General, and a member of its board of directors, and he was instrumental in the growth of the hospital and the expansion of its services. He was also on the boards of directors of Town & Country and Memorial hospitals, and was appointed to the Hillsborough County Health Planning Council. With the Hillsborough County Medical Association, Dr. York served on the board of censors, the board of trustees and the board of directors. Members of the Greater Tampa Bay Urological Society elected Dr. York their first president, and he served on the board of directors of the Southeastern Section of the American Urological Association. He was co-founder of the Bay Area Renal Stone Center and twice served as its president. He also served as president and a member of the board of directors of the American Lithotripsy Society. He founded the Unisource Malpractice Insurance Co. . York was a pioneer of the world's first mobile lithotripter and was a diplomat of the American College of Surgeons. He was appointed chairman of the American Cancer Society/ NASA research committee for transfer of NASA technology for the improvement of patients with cancer and other diseases. He was devoted to treatment of patients, but also had a passion for teaching medical and nursing students, interns, surgery and urology residents and his medical colleagues. At Tampa General, he was teaching chief of the urology residency program, and he was and associate professor, clinical professor and clinical professor emeritus of the department of surgery at University of South Florida College of Medicine. He retired from medical practice in 1992, but he continued working in management and training at the Renal Stone Center. In his off-hours, he loved to carve and paint decorative duck decoys, and he cherished the time he spent with his children and grandchildren, especially fishing with his son. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed golf and hunting expedition with his buddies in Missouri, Wyoming, Alaska. He loved attending Bucs games and coached his son's Little League teams, He was a member of the Merrymakers Club, the Downtown Rotary Club, Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla, Tampa Yacht & Country Club, and Palma Ceia Golf & Country Club. His family, friends and patients remember him as a man of great faith with broad shoulders and a bright smile, his warm and loving nature. He will be forever missed. The family gives special thanks to the caregivers from the Right at Home Agency for their loving and expert support. There will be a memorial service on Wednesday, January 9 from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. with visitation of family and friends following from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m., both at the funeral home. My thoughts, prayers, and condolences go out to Dr. Yorks family. He was my Urologist from the age of 8 years old in 1968 until his retirement in 1992. He was a kind and caring Doctor, who always made me feel special, and always had a smile on his face when he would greet you. He knew I loved cars, and always took the time to talk to me about them. I will always remember your kindness Dr York. God Bless You and your Family.

Dr.York performed my surgery when I was 3 years old.That was 51 years ago! I will always be grateful to him for saving my kidney. His name has always been in my prayers and my heart goes out to his family.What a wonderful person he was. God Bless.

Dr. York was my urologist from the time I was sixteen years old until his retirement. He was a very gentle man. I have never found another doctor in his field I could be as comfortable with. Rest in peace Dr. York.
