WHITE, Charlotte Curry, 89, died January 27, 2014 in Naples, FL. She was born in Tampa, Florida on December 2, 1924, one of three children of Rupert A. Curry and Carrie Lou Cumming Curry. She was predeceased by her daughter, Lynda Jean White, and her sister, Olga Curry Jackman. Upon graduation from Thomas Jefferson High School in Tampa in 1942, she attended Florida State College for Women (now known as Florida State University). She left college to be married to Raymond S. White, Jr. who had returned from service in the Army Air Corps in Europe and was stationed at MacDill Field. She was active in the Highland Avenue Methodist Church and became President of the Tampa District of the Woman's Society of Christian Service of the Methodist Church. She also served on committees for the Florida Conference, and drove Boy Scouts wherever they needed to go. In 1962 she resumed her college education. She was in the first graduating class of the University of South Florida in 1964 earning a Bachelor's Degree in Education. She continued her education earning a Master's of Science Degree in Education (with Reading Specialty) in 1966. In 1974 she graduated from Florida State University with a PhD (specialty in Education Administration). She was Director of Christian Education at Hyde Park United Methodist Church in Tampa from 1964-1966. She was a teacher a Paul Mort Elementary School in Tampa from 1966-1967. In 1968 she was Supervisor of Reading for the Charlotte County, Florida School System. In 1969 she was recruited to the Florida Department of Education where she served as an Educational Consultant until her retirement in 1992. Surviving her are her son, Dennis R. White; her grandson, Curry M. White; and her sister, Carolyn L. Curry. A funeral service celebrating her life will be held on Saturday morning, February 1, at 11 o'clock from the chapel of JGR Funeral Home, 6718 N. Armenia Ave., with interment to follow in Myrtle Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Saturday morning from 10:00 until time of service at the funeral home.
