DeVOS, John A., 95, of Sebring, passed away on Thursday, April 3, 2014 at Fairway Pines at Sun 'n Lake. Born in the Netherlands, he was the son of Jacob and Catarina DeVos. He was one of 15 children with 7 brothers and 7 sisters. He and his family moved to America in 1948 after WWII and bought a dairy farm in Monroe, NY. He came to Sebring in 1979. John was a dedicated member of the First Presbyterian Church in Monroe where he served many years on the Board of Trustees. He was a selfless man known for his generous and helping nature to others and his endless stories. He always finished his conversations to family members with, "I love all my kids equally and pray for them every night." He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years, Nellie. He is survived by his 3 children, Henrietta Souchu and Catherine Daly, both of Sebring, and John A. DeVos, Jr. (Sue) of N. Ferrisburg, VT. He was the grandfather of 10 grandchildren: Rosemary, John (Karen), Catherine (Frank), John III (Cheryl), Christopher, Jennifer (Vaughn), Leigh (Veronia), William (Donna), Patrick and James (Lisa); 18 great grandchildren, Michael, Alexander, Bradford, Matthew, Gianna, Ryan, Joshua, Hillary, John IV, Amanda (Misha), Allison, Jonathan, Megan, Nathan, Kara (Charles), Katelyn, Allison and Elizabeth; and a great-great-granddaughter, Eisley. He is also survived by 3 sisters in the Netherlands and many nieces and nephews that reside in the Netherlands and the United States. A private service for the family will be held at Dowden Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at 1:00 PM with Rev. Wilmont McCrary officiating. Interment will be in Bougainvillea Cemetery in Avon Park. There will be a celebration of his life at a later date in Vermont. Condolences may be expressed by visiting TBO.Com.
