MAYOR, Ernest, 78, of Tampa, passed away March 4, 2010, surrounded by his loving family. A native of Ybor City, Fla., and a lifelong resident of Tampa, he graduated from Jefferson High School, in 1950. An outstanding athlete, he earned football scholarships from the University of Florida and the University of Tampa. He was a City of Tampa firefighter and retired after 22 years of service. He then became the physical education instructor at St. Joseph' s Catholic School, where he had previously been the head basketball coach. Coach Mayor led the Tigers to numerous championships in basketball, soccer, and softball. He later began a third career with the State of Florida Health Department, from which he retired, after seventeen years. His wonderfully upbeat personality and incredible sense of humor brought constant joy and laughter to all who knew him, worked with him, played for him, and loved him. Preceded in death by his brother, Gumersindo Mayor, Jr.; and sister, Carmen Camero, he is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Tessie Mayor; son, Ernest (Jozanne) Mayor, Jr.; daughter, Cathy (Scott) Zackal; grand-children, Justin, Erin, Austin, and Kierstin Mayor, and Louis Garcia; brother, George (Norma) Mayor; sisters, Sara (Luis) Ayers, and Mercy (Luciano) Alfonso; sister-in-law, Norma Mayor; brother-in-law, Sergio Camero; and many loving nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Violet Arden, Marta Alvarez, Dr. John Ramirez, Dr. Christopher George and staff, and also the Burgundy Team at Lifepath Hospice, for their loving care and attention. Funeral services will take place at 1 p.m. Monday afternoon, March 8, from the chapel of JGR Funeral Home, with Monsignor Laurence E. Higgins, P.A., Pastor Emeritus, St. Lawrence Catholic Church officiating. Entombment will follow in Centro Asturiano Memorial Park Mausoleum. Pallbearers include: Ernest Mayor, Jr., Justin and Austin Mayor, Louis Garcia, Scott Zackal, Sindo and George Mayor. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to LifePath Hospice, Inc., 3010 W. Azeele Street, Tampa, Florida 33609 or to a charity of your choice. The family will receive friends 11- a.m.- 1 p.m. Monday, March 8, at the chapel of JGR Funeral Home.
