RIVERS, U.S. Marine Corps Lance Corporal Thomas E. Jr., went to be

with the Lord the morning of Wed-nesday, April 28, 2010, due to enemy action while he was fulfilling his lifelong dream of serving as a U.S. Marine Corps lance corporal. Rivers was stationed in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, with Platoon 1, Alpha Company 1st Battalion 2nd Marines. This was his second deployment, the first being in Iraq. Lance Cpl. Rivers entered the U.S. Marine Corps after graduating from Briarwood Christian School in Birmingham, Ala., in 2007. He is survived by his parents, Dr. Tom and Charon Rivers of Birmingham, Ala.; sister, Rachel of Birmingham; grandparents, retired Col. and Mrs. Charles R. Doke of Tampa; aunts, Shirley Simpson of Tampa, Sally Creel, Becky Rivers of Gardendale, Alabama, Cathy Robbins of Tampa, and Nancy Harrison of Miami, Fla.; uncle, Robert Rivers of Orlando, Fla.; cousins, 1st Lt. Ashley Coley and Will Coley, both formerly of Tampa; and many friends. Visitation will take place 5-7 p.m. Thursday, May 6, 2010, at Ridout' s Southern Heritage Funeral Home, 475 Cahaba Valley Road, Pelham, AL 35124. The funeral will begin at 11 a.m. Friday, May 7, 2010, at Briarwood Presbyterian Church, 2200 Briarwood Way, Birmingham, AL 35243. The graveside service will be conducted later Friday afternoon at Alabama National Cemetery, 3133 Highway 119, Montevallo, AL 35115. "Thomas gave his heart to our Lord Jesus Christ and his life for his country." In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made payable to Briarwood Christian School and designated for the Thomas Rivers Jr. Warrior Scholarship.
