PEREZ, Joseph Raymond, 66, of Tampa, FL, died July 22, 2012 in Herat, Afghanistan. Joe was born March 16th 1946 in Brooklyn, NY, to Joseph and Matilde Perez. Joe enlisted in to the United States Marine Corp at 17 years old and proudly served 8½years of service including two tours in Vietnam. He retired from U.S. Customs as a Port Director after 35 years. He worked as the head of security for The Ocean Jewel Cruise Casino, and also as a security officer and substitute teacher for Hillsborough County Schools. He was recently employed by FedSys as a Customs Advisor on his second tour in Afghanistan. He was a member of the VFW, Fraternal order of Police, the Marine Corp League and the American Legion. Joe was preceded by his parents Joseph Perez and Matilde Cruz Perez and sister Elisa Perez Marsala. He is survived by his wife, Debra, and sister Lilian Arnold, his 5 children Adam Perez, Anthony Perez, Tracy Herring, Robin Perez, Nicholas Perez and his 13 grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday morning, July 30, at 11:30 AM, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, 5225 N. Himes Ave., with Monsignor Laurence E. Higgins, P.A., Pastor Emeritus, officiating. Interment will follow at 2:30 PM with full military honors in Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Florida.
