MATTHEWS, Walter Ira, Sr., 75, of Lake Placid, passed away Thursday evening July 26, 2012, at his residence. He was born on March 19, 1937, in Queens, NY, to parents Edith Elizabeth (Sullivan) and Marion Mason Matthews. Mr. Matthews served his country in the U.S. Army at the end of the Korean War, and was stationed in Japan for two years. Mr. Matthews, a retired pressman, worked for many years with the Williams and Wilkins Printing in Maryland. He moved to Lake Placid 24 years ago and worked as a pressman and for the State of Florida Department of Corrections as a corrections officer. Walter enjoyed fishing, boating and hunting, and loved spending time with family and friends. He was of the Methodist faith. Mr. Matthews was preceded in death by his son, Walter Ira Matthews, Jr., USN retired; and is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Erma; daughter, Elizabeth Ann Simpers; son, Edwin Mason Matthews (Cynthia); daughter-in-law, Debra R. Matthews; three grandchildren, Jordan A. Simpers 14, James T. Simpers 11, and Isabelle R. Matthews, 5. Private services for the family will be held at a later date.
