NYE, Prentiss C. Jr., 86 of Spring Hill, Florida passed away peacefully at home on Weds. January, 16, 2013. He was born on July 29, 1926 in Nashua, New Hampshire to the late Prentiss Nye, Sr. and Helen (Warren) Nye. Prentiss grew up and attended schools in the Lyndeboro, N.H. area until, at the young age of 17, when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and became assigned to one of the Navy's construction battalions known as the Seabees. After serving 2 years in the Navy and receiving several Medals of Honor, he returned home and married his first wife, Judy (Tibbetts) Nye. Prentiss and Judy had a wonderful marriage that lasted for 30 years until she lost her battle with cancer. During their marriage, they ran the family business of Nye's Tropical Fish and were members of the Manchester Motorcycle Club, which often received awards for being the best dressed club in New Hampshire. Prentiss and Judy had one son, John C. Nye. After 37 years of service as a master Machinist for OK Tool in Milford, N.H., he retired so he and his second wife, Edna (Dee) Matson, whom he married in August 1980 could spend time traveling throughout the United States and abroad. They loved traveling in their RV and after having been across the United States 3 times, they decided to make Florida their permanent home. Prentiss had many hobbies such as hunting, fishing, motorcycles, bowling, shuffleboard and playing the organ. He loved his favorite baseball team, the Red Sox and playing horseshoes, which led him to compete in the World Tournament games 4 times and playing cribbage with his friends at High Point and Brookridge. He belonged to the Island X-6 group of retired Seabees in Spring Hill, Florida and could often been seen proudly wearing his Seabees hat. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 30 years, Judy (Tibbetts) Nye, his second wife of 25 years, Edna (Dee) Nye, and his son, John C. Nye. Survivors include his significant other, Thelma Tibbetts; a stepdaughter, Carol Colburn and her husband Steve of Grafton, N.H.; a stepson, Eric Matson of Sharon, N.H.; five grandchildren, Jason, Stephanie, Jessica, Luke and Lars, and two great- grandchildren, as well as several nieces and a nephew. A special thank you to "his girls", Michele, Kristy, Jolene, Jana, and Carla, who took care of him at home during his decline in health the past year and a half. Prentiss will fondly be remembered for his warm smile, kind heart and friendly personality. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. To honor his wishes, there will be no services, but he will be laid to rest at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Fla. with full military honors on Friday, January 25, 2013 at 12:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Spring Hill Chapter of Seabees (Island X-6) Please send to Al Korndoerfer 12152 Thornridge St. Brooksville, FL 34613.
