ORTIZ, Captain Jose A. "Papa Joe," A resident of Apollo Beach, Florida for over 50 years, died Monday, January 21, 2013. He was born Sept. 24, 1920 in Patillas, Puerto Rico. He proudly served in the U.S. Army for over 21 years; a veteran of WWII and the Korean War. He retired from the City of Tampa Police Communications Department, and later retired (at the age of 83) from the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Communications Department. He is predeceased by his beloved wife, Rebecca Ortiz, and recently a sister, Lyda Pacheco. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Kent Ortiz and Liz Collier-Ortiz; daughter, Dr. Carmen de Lourdes Ortiz; brother, Jorge Ortiz; sisters, Elba Berger, Eneida Rivera, and Nelsie Aybar; granddaughter, Nicole Ortiz; great-granddaughter, Brenna Rae; and many loving nieces and nephews. Services are Monday, January 28, 2013 at National Cremation & Burial Society 308 E. College Ave Ruskin, FL 33570 (813) 645-3231. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. - 2 p.m., service starting at 2 p.m., followed by grave site military honor presentation. In lieu of flowers, donation to the Florida Sheriff Youth Ranch would be appreciated.
