Fred Karl, longtime Tampa public servant, died Thursday. He was 88. Karl served as a state legislator in both houses, state supreme court justice, and president and CEO of Tampa General Hospital. He also earned a Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Silver Star after being wounded during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II. Karl was born May 14, 1924, in Daytona Beach and earned his law degree from Stetson University in 1949.
