Larry E. Buchanan

LARRY E. BUCHANAN Larry Earl Buchanan was born in Evansville, IN on November 8, 1941. His family moved to Ft. Lauderdale, FL in 1954 where he attended Ft. Lauderdale High School. Larry earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree at the University of Florida and a PhD in Law. After graduating, he enlisted in the US Army and served as a 1st Lieutenant in the Army JAG Corp. He moved to Stuart in 1967 and began his legal career. At the time, there were 19 lawyers and eight traffic lights in the county. Since that time, the county has grown, in no small part due to Larry. In 1968 he joined Evans Crary, Jr. and Wm. F. Crary and they formed the firm of Crary, Buchanan and Meginnis there shortly thereafter. He served as the firm's managing partner until his retirement in 2oo6. Larry served on the Board of Governors of the Young Lawyers Section, the 19th Judicial Grievance Committee and as President of the Martin County Bar Association. He helped to form the Martin County Industrial Development Authority and served as its first legal counsel. He represented the Board of Directors of Martin Memorial Health Systems for thirty- six years and often commented that was the most gratifying work of his career. Larry was a Past President of the Stuart/Martin County Chamber of Commerce, a founding member and first President of the United Way of Martin County, a founding member and Secretary of the Economic Council of Martin County, and a founding member and President of the Martin County Gator Club. He was a past member of the Stuart Kiwanis Club. Larry was a member of the First United Methodist Church and served on several committees. His love for the Lord Jesus grew through his years as was demonstrated through his ethics and commitment to the community and law firm. At a retirement dinner in his honor, he brought the room to tears as he retold how his faith brought him through rough times with the firm. He often spoke of how proud he was of the character of the attorneys and staff that have worked at the law firm. Survivors include the Love of His life, Genie and his five children: Kyle (Laurie) Buchanan, Karlyn Cole, Steve (Jennifer) Hooks, Cristy (Nathan) Brown, Holly (Martin) Carmody; two sisters, Patt Polidan and Margo Brown; and seven grandchildren, Chelsea Barco, Collin Hooks, Lauren Hooks, Julia Hooks, Cooper Carmody, Ashley Carmody and Adam Ehler. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 A.M., Monday, October 15, 2012, at the First United Methodist Church of Stuart, 1500 S. Kanner Highway, Stuart, FL.
