MELINDA TWICHELL


MELINDA TWICHELL of Stuart, Florida passed away peacefully on July 23, 2013. Born in Oakland, California, Melinda spent her early years with her sister Deborah, their Mom and Dad, and their obedient German shepherd Sheriff. From Oakland, her family moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, Grand Rapids, Michigan, and then to Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania, where she met her future husband Fred and matriculated from Mt. Lebanon High School. She then graduated from Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania with a degree in Economics and subsequently served on Wilson College's Board of Directors. Melinda and Fred married in 1963. Their daughter Stephanie was the light of her life; she was so proud when Stephanie recently achieved her R.N. in Nursing. Melinda was determined to make it to their 50'th wedding anniversary, which she and Fred and Stephanie and friends celebrated in Melinda's room July 13 at the care center. Melinda was active in a variety of civic and community organizations throughout her life. She served with the Junior League starting in Syracuse, New York and then St. Louis where she became the Membership Vice-President. She was also a Sustaining Member of the Stuart, Florida Junior League. In St. Louis, Melinda served as Alderman for the Town of Clarkson Valley for ten years and President of Forest Hills Estates Home Owners Association. Her love of animals led her to become very active in the St. Louis Zoo. She was a member of the Board of Zoo Friends and was Co-Chairman of the biannual fund raiser, "Zoofari." Melinda's respect for the men and women who wear the uniform and sacrifice to protect the citizens of the U.S. was demonstrated by her serving on the Board of the James S. McDonnell USO in St. Louis. Melinda's working career included being the Manager of Professional Development of a consortium of 45 Public School Districts in St. Louis. Subsequently, she joined the administrative team of College Counseling and Admissions at Whitfield School, a private St. Louis school. Melinda retired in 2004, and she and Fred moved to Stuart, Florida where they became members of the Mariner Sands Country Club. After moving to Stuart, they joined the Stuart Yacht and Country Club. Here Melinda was a very dedicated member of the Board of Directors and also became President of the Ladies 9 Hole Golf Association. Not content to sit back, Melinda, in her typical fashion, completed the Master Gardener Program and became a University of Florida Master Gardener. She then served as President of the Martin County Master Gardeners. Her love of plants, flowers, and her passion for Florida-friendly planting led her to become a member of the Stuart Garden Club where she became Co- Chairman of the 2008 Garden Club tour. In addition to her devoted husband Fred and her beloved daughter Stephanie, Melinda is survived by her sister Deborah Menke of St. Louis. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, July 27, 2013 at 3 pm at Stuart Congregational Church , 3110 SE Aster Ln Stuart, FL 34994,where Melinda was a member. A reception will follow at the Yacht and Country Club.
