MAJOR ROBERT BRADFORD HILL Major Robert Bradford Hill, retired USAF, died June 13, 2014,
on his 88th birthday, in Melbourne, Florida. Born in Braintree, MA, he was the son of the late Mervin Bradford Hill and Miriam Lilley MacDowell. Major Hill is survived by his three children: Cathy (Burns) McArthur of Melbourne; Brad (Mary Jean) Hill of Merritt Island; and Steve (Valerie) Hill of Raleigh, NC; two granddaughters, Nichole Alden of Santa Monica, CA, and Christine Hill of Palm Bay. He was predeceased by one sister, Ethel Hollywood Norum, and leaves many lifelong friends who remember his storytelling, jokes, and adventurous lifestyle. Major Hill was first a US Navy
Aviation cadet while at Dartmouth College. Discharged after WWII
, he went to work for the Charles G. Jordan Insurance Company in Weymouth, MA. In 1951, Major Hill entered US Air Force
Officer Training, and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in June of 1952, the same month he married Meriel Jean Nordling. Air Force assignments took the family to many states, as well as Belgium, Italy, and Israel. One of his first duties was as Aide- de-Camp to General Hollingsworth F. Gregory, commander of the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. During his career, Major Hill served as a flight operations officer, nuclear weapons officer, flight test maintenance officer, transport pilot, and commander of several detachments. He retired in 1969, following an assignment at Griffiss AFB, Rome, NY. Upon retirement to Florida, Major Hill owned and operated Anchor Realty in Melbourne, and later served as president of the Melbourne Area Board of Realtors. He enjoyed travel, boating, water skiing, dancing, diving, flying, and sailing. Major Hill cared for his mother in her final years; they were snowbirds between Cape Cod and Stuart for several seasons. He was an active member of the Hidden Harbour Estates community in Stuart. Major Hill was a HAM radio operator, a Mason, and a Shriner. No services are planned. Special thanks to Salus Assisted Living in Melbourne. Arrangements are being handled by All County Funeral Home in Stuart. Interment with full honors will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
