Robert H. Rollins

ROBERT H. ROLLINS Robert H. Rollins, 99 years of age, died on January 31, 2013 at Indian River Medical Center. He was born in Prince William County, Virginia. He played baseball and later became a builder and developer in Northern Virginia. Wanting to move away from cold winters, he toured Florida in 1949 looking for a place to live. He went down the West Coast, looked around the Miami area and headed up the East Coast. When he arrived in Vero Beach, he knew in his heart this was the place. He bought a home and moved his family here. In Vero Beach he was a rancher and citrus grower. Over the years he was a Charter Member of St. Vincent de Paul Society and volunteered picking up furniture donations until he was 84. As a Charter Member of the Volunteer Ambulance Squad, he served when the squad was the Emergency Response Team and he served as the ambulance driver. He was a Charter Member and served on the Board of St. Francis Manor and served as a volunteer for the American Red Cross, the Economic Opportunities Council, the St. Helen Harvest Festival, and as a member of Operation Play Ball - selling advanced season tickets to the Vero Beach Dodgers games. Until 3 weeks ago he enjoyed dancing 4 days a week to the Big Band Sound as performed by the Accidental's Band. A group of his Lake-in-the-Woods friends challenged him to billiards games 3 days a week. He enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gertrude and Frederick Early Rollins, an infant son, Robert Rollins, Jr., his former wife, Mable C. Rollins and 11 brothers and sisters. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 38 years, Betty Rollins; daughters, Gloria Smith and her husband Robert of Troutman, NC, Gwen Smith and her partner, Robert Hanmer of Vero Beach, Gail Shelton and her husband Charles of McLean, VA, and Vicki Alexander and her husband Robert of Gowan, MI; step-daughter, Sharon Glenn and her husband George of Vero Beach, FL; grandchildren, Kelly Campbell (Mark), Kristen Barbeio (Russ), Travis Smith (Sara), Adam Smith (Addie), Joy Ducey, Holly Alexander and her partner Anthony Torres, George A. Glenn, Jr. and Heather G. Inman. The children who call him GG Bob include Morgan Smith, Tyler Smith, Alex Ducey, Anna Ducey, Kellan Smith, Ellie Torres, Lillian Barbeio, Connor Barbeio, Caroline Inman and Wilson Inman. Visitation will be at Cox-Gifford-Seawinds Funeral Home, from 2:00 until 4:00 PM, Sunday, February 3rd. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM, Monday, February 4, 2013 at St. Helen Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Crestlawn Cemetery.
