ROBERT OWEN MARTIN Robert (Bob) Owen Martin, 77, of Ft. Pierce, FL passed away on Sunday, August 18, 2013 at Lawnwood Regional Medical Center. He was born March 31, 1936 in New York City and had been a resident of the Treasure Coast for 19 years, coming from Manchester, CT. He was a veteran of the United States Navy. Bob served 29 years as a fire fighter for the Town of Manchester. During his career, he was elected Vice-President of IAFF Local 1579 from 1973-1976 prior to serving 17 years as Union President until his retirement from the fire department in 1994. He was instrumental in establishing the Town of Manchester Paramedic Program. Mr. Martin was the founding member of Local 1579's annual "MDA Fill the Boot Drive." Bob was very active in the Connecticut labor movement and in his community. He was a board member of the United Way, Vice President of the Greater Hartford Labor Council, and served on the board of the State of Connecticut Labor Agency. During his fire fighter and union down time, he was found running the concession stand on Friday nights during midget football season at Mt. Nebo Park in Manchester, CT. He was a member of the South Manchester Uniform Retired Fire Fighters (SMURFFS), the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks #1520 in Ft. Pierce and was an avid golfer with the "Old Duffers Golf League." Mr. Martin is survived by his wife of 49 years, Georganne Martin; son, Paul Martin of Charlotte, NC; daughter, Kathleen Martin of New Haven, CT; son, Michael Martin of Ft. Pierce; brother, John (Marie) Martin of Vernon, CT; grandchildren, Eian and Samantha Martin and great- grandchildren, Adrian and Sierra Martin. He was predeceased by his son, Robert L. Martin in 2008, sister Joanne King and his mother, Nora Martin. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 2pm, Saturday, August 24, 2013 at St. Helen Catholic Church, Vero Beach. Interment will take place at South Florida National Cemetery at a later date. Donations may be made to Town of Manchester Fire/Rescue Department, Paramedic Fund, 75 Center Street, Manchester, CT 06040.
