Bud Barney Obituary

BUD ERNEST BARNEY Mr. Bud Ernest Barney, 80, died June 29, 2009 at The Place, Vero Beach after a courageous battle with cancer and diabetes. Bud was born in Miami, FL in 1928, the adopted son of James and Louise Barney. He spent his childhood in Miami and joined the U.S. Army at the young age of 17. He served 23 years in the Army, earning 2 Bronze Stars during the Korean War, 7 Good Conduct Medals and numerous other Army commendations. In 1968 Bud was recommended for and placed on the 'First List' for the new rank of Command Sgt. Major. He was one of the first in the Army to achieve this rank. He retired from the Army in 1969. After retirement he moved to Margate, FL and was employed by the U.S. Post office in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Bud transferred to the Vero Beach Post Office in 1972. While working for the Post Office he returned to school at night and in 1979 received his Bachelor's Degree in Business from Jones College in Ft. Pierce. He retired from the Post Office, after 20 years of service, in 1989. After retirement Bud remarried and he and wife Carrol purchased a motor home and traveled throughout the U.S. and Canada. Together they managed to visit all 49 of the continental United States and all of the Canadian Provinces. Both in military and civilian life Bud was very active with his church and Masonic Lodge. His accomplishments in the Masonic Lodge include; Blue Lodge 1960 Oregon Military, Frankfurt Germany; demitted to Vero Beach Masonic Lodge 250 F &AM, the Square and Compass Club (founded Square and Compass Club in Seoul, Korea; Order of Eastern Star; Friendship #4 Kaiserslautern, Germany and Vero Beach Chapter 135, Masonic Home Committee, Appeals and Grievance, Grand Representative to North Dakota, Jurisprudence Committee; York Rite, joined Palatinate #7 and Tyre #4 Kaiserslautern and Heidelberg, Germany, High Priest, Illustrious Master, Commander, Grand Chaplain, Grand Principal Conductor of Work, Grand King, Grand Representative to Florida, New Mexico, Maine and Idaho, Red Cross of Constantine, Grand Imperial Council of Scotland, Labarum Conclave Orlando, Order of the Priesthood, Order of Anointed King, Knight Crusader of the Cross, KYCH and York Rite College; High 12 Club #655, 2nd Vice President, 1st Vice President, President, Treasurer and Secretary; Dad Advisor for Demolay and Dad Advisor for Rainbow. Bud was a very active member at Asbury United Methodist Church, Vero Beach. He participated in the Senior Life Games, American Cancer Society Walks of Life and was an avid supporter of the Thunder on the Beach Pow Wows, Vero Beach. He was and avid coin collector and (obviously loved to go camping). Survivors include his wife, Carrol Barney of Vero Beach; son and daughter-in-law, David and Connie Barney of Sebastian, FL; grandchildren, Justin and Staci Barney of Sebastian, FL; stepsons, Randy Riggs of Detroit, MI and Tim Riggs of Vero Beach; stepdaughter, Polly Riggs of Vero Beach and 8 step grandchildren. Bud was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Faye Barney and son, Bud Ernest Barney, Jr. Bud will be remembered for his outstanding service to his country, his church and his community. But mostly he will be remembered as kind and loving man who would always go out of his way to help others. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bud E. Barney Scholarship Fund, C/O Vero Beach Masonic Lodge 250 F&AM, Post Office Box 1327, Vero Beach, FL 32961.

I knew Bud while we both worked at the Vero Beach Post Office. A good and kind man and altho we had little contact after we both retired, he will be missed. Vero's loss is Heaven's gain. Our sympathies to the family.
