CHRISTOPHER HUGHES Christopher Hughes a resident of Jensen Beach passed away on June 9th at the age of 65. He was a Merchant Marine Engineer having received his license in 1967 and retired in 2001. During his 33 years of maritime service, Mr. Hughes was responsible for the physical operations of ocean going vessels in support operations through the world including: The U.S. Navy's Sealift Command which included re-supply missions to McMurdo Station in Antarctica for the Nations Service Foundation, Thule Air Force Base in Greenland, the U.S. Marine Corps, NASA and The United Nations relief missions. In 1975 Mr. Hughes participated in a historic humanitarian effort by the U.S. Inter-Agency Task Force for Indo China Refugees. His ship, the S.S. Pioneer Contractor was one of five that dramatically rescued and evacuated thousands of fear-stricken Vietnamese refugees trying to escape on-rushing Vietcong and North Vietnamese armies. In recognition of his efforts, Mr. Hughes was the recipient of Appreciation from the then Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, and the Vietnam Service Bar from the U.S. Dept of Commerce Maritime Administration. During 1995-2001 Mr. Hughes served under the command of Peter Stalkus, Master of the MV Green Wave. Quoting Master Stalkus "Mr Hughes sailed as First Assistant Engineer and upon my recommendations, Chief Engineer. Mr. Hughes carried out his responsibilities in exemplary manner He was conscientious, motivated and eager. The Vessel was tasked on difficult assignments in the nature of cargo handled, security issues and routes transited. He was proficient in all duties and played a significant role in the success of the vessel's venture, operationally and economically. Mr. Hughes earned the highest recommendation with the company review process. He was a good shipmate, always willing to help others. He garnered the admiration and respect of all those who worked with him." Mr. Hughes was born in Mt. Vernon, N.Y. to Paul J. Hughes and Silvia Cimmino Hughes. He is survived by his Mother Silvia C. Hughes of Stuart and brothers Paul of Norwalk, CT., John of Raleigh, NC and Brian of Dunbury, CT. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Paid Obituary
