HENRY McCLUNEY Obituary


HENRY NICOLAUS McCLUNEY Henry Nicolaus McCluney, 95, passed away very peacefully, June 4, 2013, at his home in Vero Beach, FL. He was born in St. Louis, MO on September 11, 1917, the son of Daniel C. and Elsa McCluney. He graduated from St. Louis Country Day School and in 1939 from Amherst College, both of which he supported passionately. In 1940 Mr. McCluney married Carolyn Lansing to whom he was married for 73 years. Mr. McCluney, a brew master, left his family brewing business to work for Hyde Park Brewery then was hired by Anheuser Busch in St. Louis, MO. In 1950 Mr. McCluney and his wife moved to Short Hills, NJ for nine years where Mr. McCluney oversaw the construction and managed the new Budweiser plant in Newark, NJ. Mr. McCluney retired from Anheuser Busch as Executive Vice President. Prior to moving to John's Island in Vero Beach, FL in 1971, Mr. McCluney and his wife lived in St. Louis, Missouri, Short Hills, NJ and Linville, NC. They were members of the St. Louis Country Club, The Log Cabin Club, the Short Hills Club, the Bay Head Yacht Club, Baltusrol Golf Club, the Linville Country Club, the Riomar Country Club and the John's Island Club where he was President from 1989-1990. Mr. McCluney was actively involved and on the boards of the Riverside Theater and Institute for the Deaf. An avid golfer, Mr. McCluney was a member of the United States Seniors for many years. He also enjoyed bridge and was an excellent player. Not many had as many true friends as Mr. McCluney, all of whom he loved. Member of his family surviving to whom Mr. McCluney was so loving and generous are his wife, Carolyn, to whom he was devoted, two daughters and sons-in-laws, Carolyn and Anthony Buford and Elisabeth and Mason Delafield, five grandchildren, Elisabeth Buford Collins, Beau and Lance Buford, Carolyn Manley Powers and Henry D. Manley and eight great-grandchildren. A private service will be held in the John's Island Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the United States Seniors' Golf Association, 49 Knollwood Road, Elmsford, NY 10523 and to the Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice Foundation, 1110 35th Lane, Vero Beach, Fl 32960 in memory of Mr. McCluney.
