MARGARET (PEG) ALLEE Long time Vero Beach resident Laura Margaret Allee died on August 14, 2013 of natural causes. She was 98 and just 2 weeks shy of her 99th birthday. Peg was born in Lamar, Missouri on September 2, 1914 to Gail Darwin Allee and Katharine Bell Clark Allee. She was one of three children, her older sister Gail Allee Jenkins of Vero Beach and her brother William Sylvanus Allee. At the age of 3, the family moved to Prescott Arizona where her father was the first medical doctor. Peg attended the University of Missouri, Columbia where she received her under graduate degree in Journalism in 1937. Peg was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. In 1936 she worked for the St. Louis Post Dispatch as a copywriter and then New York School for the Education of the Blind in 1939. In 1943 Peg joined the American Red Cross and served at a number of posts and camps during World War II. While working for the ARC, She went on to attend George Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri where she earned her Masters in Social Work in 1949. In 1950, Peg was assigned to the 361st Station Hospital, Tokyo, Japan and in 1952 to a MASH unit in South Korea. Peg later became the Director of the South East Section of the American Red Cross in Atlanta, Georgia where she retired in 1969 and moved to Vero Beach, Florida to join her sister Gail and her husband Charles A. Jenkins (USA-retired). Peg was an avid golfer, taking up the game at age 6 and recorded 9 hole-in-ones during her golfing carrier. She was also a keen bridge player. She was a 46 year member of the Riomar Country Club a won the woman's club championship in 1973, 1977, 1978, 1979 and 1980. Peg is survived by her nephew, Charles W. Jenkins, his wife Deborah L. Jenkins and their son Shawn W. Jenkins. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the HALO Animal Rescue facility, 710 Jackson Street, Sebastian, FL 32958.
