Marjorie Taylor Obituary

MARJORIE TAYLOR Marjorie Taylor, also known as Maggie died unexpectedly of a stroke at Trenton,N.J.She was in excellent health prior to this,in fact she was windsurfing just two weeks ago before this tragedy happened. Born at Oceanside Long Island December 26th 1935 she, was the daughter of John and Angie Merrill the youngest of seven children, graduating from New Paltz State University Newburgh N.Y. She taught 4th grade in Long Island for several years. She always had a zest for travel so she applied at the State Department and became an overseas teacher for Armed Forces children in Newfoundland,France and England.Following her return to this country she became upset about discrimination she found in Long Island schools. She resigned her teaching position and was promised a school position in Long Island if she returned. She left and became a Civil Rights worker in Mississippi in 1964 for a full year. This was a very dangerous mission but in spite of this she remained and helped negroes register to vote. She was there when several of the churches she attended were burned to the ground. On return from Mississippi she became concerned about children with autism, attended BU, and received her doctorate in education. She became director of the League School in Boston which was a school that cared for autistic children. She was previously married to Richard Smith who founded Spurwink ,a program to care for troubled and autistic children. Together they developed a wonderful program to help children in need. .She directed and developed several of the teaching programs .The big change in her life began when she developed a passion for windsurfing .She would go on leave from school just to get out on the water in Florida and feel that freedom to go with the wind. Those that don't know it, they just need to know the freedom and escape it holds for Maggie and her husband Bill Taylor. Following her divorce she met her present husband at a Back Cove Portland Maine sailing party. They have had an idyllic marriage, were involved in many windsurf races winning a large number of national races including Canada. Together they worked in three Indian Reservations, and then volunteered in the Dominican Republic several times With the University of Maine Nursing school care for those in need. She is a member of the Unity Church and is a chaplain there. She is an ombudsman in Florida evaluating nursing homes and resolving complaints brought by residents. She is a court appointed mediator in Florida for small claims court settling claims for less then $5000. Her regulator weekly schedule was gym three times a week,Tai Chi twice a week, yoga once, mediation once a week at small claims court, ombudsman several times a month, regularity the swimming pool almost daily in Florida. She was an arvid reader, was a wonderful cook and preferred to eat her tempting recipes with her husband rather than eat out. Her most recent interest is the piano keyboard and was taking lessons weekly. Anyone who knows her loves and appreciates her wonderful caring, positive, attitude and zest for life. She will be sorely missed by all.She was true example for goodness, being open just herself, looking out for others, being interested in everyone in their needs She leaves many nieces and nephews from her six brothers and sisters and leaves six "adopted" children from her marriage from her husband. A memorial service is planned in Maine and in Florida. The service in Maine will be at the Unity Church,154 River Road in Windham with the date to be announced. Maggie is an inspiration on and off of the water. She is a wonderful lady to all the people she has met. She has given so much of her time to other people. We are all lucky to have had her in our lives. I will sail the Taylor Equipe in her honor.

Once I was interviewed by a local news program and was asked about windsurfing. They inquired about my hero's and instead of all the hot-shot folk's in the magazines I told them about about my real hero's, Maggie and Bill were were at the top of the list. Why? Because they made everyone around them enjoy being at that regatta or session a whole lot more and their spirit was undeniable. I still have an old Mistral Superlite from Maine that I bought from Maggie, I guess that I'll have to rig it up and go sailing . Maybe Maggie and I can have a few more adventures on the waters that she so loved and graced with her indominatable spirit.

Dear Uncle Bill,

My lesson from Maggie is... Now is the time to live life fully for tomorrow is uncertain. She knew how to do it.

Aunt Bunny I can't believe you've moved on from this world, and I can't begin to imagine gathering the family without you. You're a beautiful and loving soul and the only comfort I can have from your absence is knowing you've co-created a beautiful loving place alongside your big brother and sister.

Bill, I can't begin to image your loss, and while I share the deepest empathy, the void I feel can never match the love you shared with your beautiful partner and wife

Well, it is true that words are not adequate to express the depth of heart in which my Aunt Bunny dwells. My dad was her eldest brother and she the last living sibling. Heavenly Father certainly saved the best for last in this case! I remember when Hurricane Katrina hit and I finally spoke with Maggie after a few weeks. I told her I thought she and Bill were down there helping victims. She laughed and said some others had thought the same, though she and Bill were dealing with their own house's disaster. She did not seem to understand why everyone would think they would be doing that, but I think we all know why. They both have shown their agape love to such a degree that it was just expected! She was so devoted to family and friends, I know she still is. I can also envision her smiling face and strong spirit at work in a different realm. She seemed happier in the last couple of years than I had ever seen her. That is so wonderful. She set such an example of living in faith and gratitude. I miss her physical presence, but her spiritual presence was always so much stronger that it is still very real to me. I was surely expecting at least another 15 years of Maggie being available to visit...this just shows us how precious every day is and how important our loved ones are more than anything! Uncle Bill has been such an enormous blessing to Maggie, giving her love and companionship of such an incredible calabre that most of us have to be a tad jealous! She could really thrive and so could he. A beautiful couple. I really thank God for her life and their lives together. I will be in Maine soon to honor her life with may family members I have never met. I want to thank everyone who made her feel so loved in Uncle Bill's family, as well. A very special family indeed.

Bill,

I am still in shock about Maggie's passing, I think of you both often. Maggie was an inspiration, I loved to hear tales of the Civil Rights work she did, and her work at Spurwink.

My Maggie, kitty 7 years, I named after your Maggie, when I got her she quickly proved to be a free spirit. I remember the night at the lake when I told your Maggie about my kitty, she laughed and said she was honored.

She will be sorely missed by friends, but I know of your heartache and I want you to know you remain in my prayers and thoughts....

Bill,
I am so sorry for your loss. I know the light Aunt Bunny was in my life. There is no part of my life that she was not here. Challenging me, encouraging me, loving me so unconditionally. That light has changed but remains. You can call anytime. I feel lucky to have met you through her and will see you soon.
Peace and Love,
Alli

To the family of Maggie Taylor,
I worked with Maggie at Spurwink from about mid 1984 to the early 1990's. She had a bulldog named Molly (if my memory serves me) at the time and she would come to work with her. And, of course, Maine weather permitting, her wind-surfing board was with her too! Her passion for life was evident in everything she did and I will remember her fondly. RIP Maggie...

Dear Bill,

What a truly spirited woman she was!!!! How I admired her confidence, her passion, her focus. I know how close you were and my prayers are for you to find strength among your many friends and your two spiritual communities. I will never, ever forget her. If there is anything I can do for you, just ask. I love you. Linda Machesic

Dear Bill and family,
Words cannot express my deepest sympathy. Maggie meant so much to me as a fellow prayer chaplain, and as someone I admire so much. You both inspire me, and I will do my best to help you in any way and to keep you and all your family in my daily prayers for comfort, guidance and healing. I am comforted knowing that there is one very special angel, named Maggie, who is now watching over all of us.

Dear Bill,
Words are so puny and inadequate. I've been sitting here staring at this screen just stunned and incredulous at getting this shockingly bad news. There are no good words of consolation, perhaps the best I can do is to offer you the energy of empathy across the miles that separate us. It will be hard to imagine meeting you out on the trail without Maggie at your side.
With deepest sympathy and love.......Dick and Pat Atkinson

Bill,
What a shock, yet she sounds like to the end she was doing what she loved. You were fortunate to have shared so much together.

You've captured Maggie so wonderfully in your fine obituary letting us know the highlights. So much she has accomplished and has given so much to others. What a woman, a life well-lived.

Our heart goes out to you and family and friends who loved her.

Bill, I extend my deepest sympathies to you and your farmily. I absolutely cannot believe what I am reading, and no words can better express who Maggie was then those written in the Press Journal obituary. Maggie was so warm and loving and genuinely cared about people and making their lives better. Although I only knew her for a short period of time, I felt like I had known her for years (and wished I had) because she was so genuinely caring. May your wonderful memories be a source of comfort in your grief.
