Willie Frances Smith-Newkirk


Willie Frances S. Smith-Newkirk, 82, died June 17, 2013, at Kindred Hospital of the Palm Beaches. She was born in Metter, Ga., and lived in Stuart for six years, coming from Hobe Sound. Before retirement, she was employed as a housekeeper for private homes on Jupiter Island. She was a nanny for former President George W. Bush and former Gov. Jeb Bush and worked for Henry Flowers, the former secretary of the Treasury department. She attended Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church, the Pentecostal Church of God In Christ, New Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church and the Port Salerno Church of God. Survivors include her sons, Jerry Smith of Port Salerno, Minister Jimmy Smith and Eugene Smith, both of Stuart; daughters, Diana Dotson and Kasandra Smith-Patterson of Stuart, Rosa Fate of Oviedo, Angela Smith-Pettway of Hobe Sound and Gwendolyn Ford of Stuart; brother, Willie James Griffin of Delray Beach; sister, Minnie Newkirk of Metter; 37 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas W. Newkirk; children, Debra Smith, Ronald Newkirk, Charlene Jones and Robert Smith; and siblings, Lennell Griffin, Eula C. Montgomery and Audrey Mincey. Services: Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. June 28 at New Allen Temple AME Church in Hobe Sound. A home-going celebration will be at 2 p.m. June 29 at the church.
