Robert Lawton Mitchell


Robert Lawton Mitchell, 88, died July 16, 2009, at his home. He was born in St. Paul, Minn., and lived in Vero Beach, coming from Garden City, N.Y. He was a veteran of the Navy, serving as an officer during World War II. He was a graduate of Amherst College and Yale Law School. He had a long career as a municipal bond attorney in New York City. His accomplishments as an attorney included securing funding for the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and tunnel project in Virginia and the Mackinac Bridge over the Straits of Mackinac to upper Michigan. He was a member of Sea Oaks Tennis Club, Vero Beach. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Hazel I. Mitchell of Vero Beach; daughters, Suzanne Mitchell of Louisville, Ky., and Jeanne Mitchell Orefice of Pelham, N.Y.; son, Robert Mitchell of Sumner, Wash.; brother, William Mitchell of Naples; and five grandchildren.
