CAPT. BURKE D. (JOE) LUCAS, USN, RET. 4/12/24 - 11/4/12 Burke Lucas was born in Guthrie, OK, to Burke and Jessie Lucas on April 12, 1924. After growing up in Ponca City, OK, he was commissioned in the Navy in 1944 and earned his wings as a Naval Aviator. He graduated from the Naval War College and served on the USS SALISBURY SOUND before becoming the commanding officer of the USS HORNET (CVS- 12). His final assignment prior to retiring in 1972 was at the Pentagon. Joe received numerous citations, ribbons, and medals throughout his career. Joe married Linda Youngs in 1971, and he and Linda settled in Annapolis, MD, where he took up what would become his next passion: SAILING. He and Linda raced and cruised several boats on the Chesapeake Bay. Following his "second" retirement (from Raytheon) the two began to cruise extensively, culminating in a trip to Europe on their 47ft boat Covenant, where they spent four years exploring the European Waterways with their family and friends. Joe was a member of the Annapolis Yacht Club and he was a former commodore of the Sailing Club of the Chesapeake. A longtime member of the Ocean Cruising Club and The Cruising Club of America, he served on the Board of Governors and as Rear Commodore of the Florida Station. After their return from cruising in Europe in 1997, Joe and Linda moved to Stuart, FL then to Palm City, FL and became very involved in their church, Redeemer Lutheran. Joe is predeceased by his wife Linda and sister Betty Miron. Joe is survived by his son Burk and wife (Patty) of Oklahoma City, three grand children and several great-grand children; his nephew Jay and wife (Julie) Miron, of Mississippi and an extensive family of friends.
