JOHN R. BLACKEBY John Robert Blackeby, 86, of Fort Pierce, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 27, 2007, with his loving family at his side. John was born on December 1, 1920, in Queens, New York, son of the late John Henry Blackeby and Dorothy Poulson Blackeby. He was a veteran of World War II having served with the United States Army Corps of Engineers in the North African and Italian Campaigns. He was Sergeant- at-Arms at the Hague Post of the American Legion in Manhattan, New York. John retired in 1985, after 48 years of service, as Corporate Secretary of the American Bureau of Shipping in New York. John and his wife, Gloria, made their winter home in Fort Pierce at Ocean Village from 1979 to 1990 when they became permanent residents. For the last two years he has enjoyed residing at Lake Forest Park. John was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and had the privilege of personally meeting Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Fort Pierce, and the Men's Club. Survivors include his devoted son, Robert William Blackeby and his wife, Sandra, of Dallas, Texas; devoted daughter, Denise Lynn Torre and her husband, Rocco, of Fort Pierce; loving grandchildren, Stephanie Lynn Torre and Stephen Paul Torre; sister, Muriel Howe of Charlotte, North Carolina; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by his loving wife of 56 years, Gloria June Blackeby, in 2003. Friends may call from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm, Friday, March 2nd and from 9:00 am until 10:00 am, Saturday, March 3rd at Yates Funeral Home, Fort Pierce. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, March 3rd, at the First United Methodist Church, Fort Pierce. Rev. Todd Stube, pastor, will officiate. Entombment will follow in the Riverview Memorial Park Mausoleum, Fort Pierce.
