TROY — Bishop Donald G. Carnes, 81, of Troy, passed away 4:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at his residence.
He was born in Troy on December 20, 1932 to the late Joseph Pridemore and Elda R. (Chavis) Carnes.
He was married to Shirley Ann Johnson in January of 1953, and she survives.
Donald is also survived by their nine children and spouses, Crystal Denise of Troy, Cameron B. Carnes of Troy, Roxane R. and Mark Kenner of Lima, Dean B. and Thiel Carnes, Sr. of Englewood, Jenifer K. and Benny Michael of Piqua, Jack E. and Andrea Carnes of Franklin Furnace, John W. and Lisa Carnes of Marion, Charles A. and Rose Mary Carnes, Sr. of Troy, Rebecca L. and Keith Harrison of Troy; thirty-one grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one great-grandson, Tyrek; his brother, Elder Joseph Carnes; and his sister, June Harger.
Donald was a member of the Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ in Troy, and later became Pastor from 1962 to 1998. He loved his church and considered his congregation his family. He also befriended and advised many ministers during his ministry.
He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict.
He worked at Hobart Corp. in Troy for 26 years, from 1951 to 1977. He was active in athletics, music and other school activities within the Troy City School District. He has visited and preached in many countries abroad, including; the Holy Land (Israel), Greece, West Indies, Jamaica, Haiti, Egypt and Ghana in Africa, and India.
He Loved helping people and was considered by many a community pastor.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 8, 2014 at the Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ, 1624 N. County Road 25A, Troy, Ohio, with Rev. Dr. Charles Carnes and Bishop Eugene Ringer officiating. Visitation will be on Friday, March 7, 2014 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the church. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Troy with a Military Graveside Service performed by the Veterans Memorial Honor Guard of Troy. Arrangements are entrusted to Fisher-Cheney Funeral Home, Troy.
