William J. Warling

PIQUA — William J. Warling, age 89, of Piqua, passed from this life at 5:10 P.M. on Friday, July 18, 2014, at Dorothy Love Retirement Community, Sidney, OH. He was born on March 14, 1925, in Wapakoneta, Ohio to the late Robert G. and Viola (Reser) Warling.

On July 25, 1945, at the First Reformed Church in Piqua, OH, he married Roberta Fry. She survives.

Bill is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law: Pamela L. Petersime, Deatsville, AL, Sonja and Steve Hudson, Boise, ID, and Vickie and Clarence Richard, Highland, MI; seven grandchildren: Kimberly Youngblood, Eric Petersime, Nicole Hudson, Kyle Hudson, Mercia Meyer, Vickie Simerson and Lisa Brown, 15 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandson. He was preceded in death by two brothers: John Warling and Robert Warling; two sisters: Mary Lou Godfrey and Rose Godfrey.

He was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical and Reformed Church, Piqua, OH.

He was a former Commander at the Veterans of Foreign Wars #4874, Piqua, OH.

William loved music and old western movies. He loved camping and fishing on his pontoon boat. He loved being with his family and grandchildren.

Bill was employed at French Oil Co. Piqua as a machinist and then was a stationary engineer at the City of Piqua Municipal Power Plant until his retirement.

William valiantly served in the 175th Infantry as a Sgt. in the U.S. Army during World War II where he served at the invasion of Omaha Beach and was wounded at the battle of hedges. He received a Purple Heart for the wounds he received and returned to the states to recuperate from his wounds and later discharged.

In 2004 William attended a ceremony at Caun, France in honor of the 60th Anniversary of D-Day. All veterans able to attend received a commemorative metal in appreciation for their part in the D-Day Invasion. The mayor of Caun, France presented William with his metal.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Wednesday July 23, 2014, at Melcher-Sowers Funeral Home, Piqua, with Dr. Keith Gebhart officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery, Piqua with full military honors presented by The Veterans Elite Tribute Squad. Friends may call from 11:00 A.M.-1:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. The Piqua Veterans of Foreign Wars Post#4874 will conduct a service in honor of Mr. Warling at 12:30 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home.
