COVINGTON — William R. "Bill" McKinney, age 79, of Covington, died Friday, January 17, 2014 at Good Samaritan Hospital, Dayton.

He was born September 27, 1934 in Lee County, KY to the late John & Mattie (Mullins) McKinney; a graduate of Germantown High School, Class of 1953; a U.S. Navy Veteran; retired from Bostwick Braun; worked part-time at Wertz Hardware in West Milton; worked part-time as a police officer in Covington; attended Covington Church of the Brethren; a member of the Covington Kiwanis Club & the Blooming Betsy Gardening Club in Troy; served on the Covington Village Council & the Covington Board of Public Affairs; was a Past President & coach for the West Carrolton Little League Baseball Association; enjoyed fishing, playing cards, reading & was an avid Cincinnati Reds baseball & Ohio State fan. He loved gardening and won many awards for the beautiful dahlias he raised.

Preceded in death by his parents; step mother, Gaynell (Terry) McKinney; brother, Beckum McKinney; & brother-in-law, Ralph Slone.

Bill is survived by his wife of 39 years, Kay (Thompson) McKinney; children, Rocky & Leslie McKinney of Springfield, Kelley & Todd Elam of Middletown, Robin & Jim Shillito of Lebanon; step children, Greg Carder & fiancée, Stacie Cain Gillespie of Covington, Todd and Dottie Carder of Bradford, & L. Tarlton & Traci Thomas III of Covington; 7 grandchildren; 8 step-grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; 4 brothers, Vance & Carol McKinney of Springboro, Ron & Sissy McKinney of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Charles & Judy McKinney of Kingston, TN, & David & Becky McKinney of Harrison, TN; 4 sisters, Wanda Slone of Lexington, KY, Laura Bishop of Miamisburg, Joy & Leroy Blackford of Loveland, & Jessie & Larry Fleeman of Centerville; father-in-law, John Thompson of Covington; & many nieces, nephews & a host of friends.

Funeral Service were Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at the Covington Church of the Brethren, 101 N. Wall St. with Pastor Michael Yingst officiating. Interment Highland Cemetery, Covington. The family received friends Tuesday, Jan. 21, at the church.
