TROY — Russell S. Thaxton, 97, of Troy, passed away 4:00 a.m. Thursday, May 22, 2014 at Troy Care Center in Troy.
He was born in McKees Rocks, PA on May 10, 1917 to the late Roma Marcus Thaxton and Mary Emma (Stoner) Thaxton Valentine. He was married to Dorothy E. Slack on October 19, 1946, for 67 years, and she survives.
Russell is also survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Earl and Sue Thaxton of Troy; one daughter, Carol Ann Malone of Troy; four grandchildren, Amy Richardson of Englewood, Brian and Nicole Thaxton of Columbus, Todd Malone of Troy, Tim Malone of Troy; seven great grandchildren, Ariell, Seth, Nathan, Annalyese, Hunter, Kaitlyn, and Jenna; two nephews; seven nieces; and one sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Bob Buirley of Casstown. He was preceded in death by one sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Bob Mason and one brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Marie Thaxton.
Russell was a retired Licensed Stationary Steam Engineer with PMI in Troy after 33 ½ years of service. He was WWII US Navy Veteran on the USS Cleburne as a boiler operator. He was a former member of American Legion Post #43 in Troy and a member of the Hobart Quarter Century Club.
A graveside service will be held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at Riverside Cemetery, Troy with a military service performed by the Veterans Memorial Honor Guard of Troy.
