Michael W. Hemm J.D.
PIQUA — Judge Michael W. Hemm, 66, of Piqua, who passed away unexpectedly of natural causes Friday June 13, 2014 at the Dumukwa Safari Camp of Alldays in the province of Limpopo, South Africa. He was born April 12, 1948 in Piqua to the late Philip R. and Nancy (Wilson) Hemm. He married Peggy Jo Mutzner May 9, 1981 at the Covington Church of the Brethren; and she survives.
Other survivors include a sister Patricia A. Kennedy of Charleston, South Carolina; a stepbrother David (Cindy) Hart of Sarasota, Florida; and a stepsister Kathy Moore of Piqua. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather Kenneth Hart, stepbrother Daniel Hart, and brother-in-law Gregg Kennedy.
Judge Hemm was a graduate of Piqua Catholic High School in 1966, obtained his undergraduate degree from Xavier University and earned his Juris Doctorate from the Salmon P. Chase College of Law at Northern Kentucky University. He began his private practice of law in Piqua serving the public for many years until his retirement as he was appointed Assistant County Prosecutor and ultimately Municipal Court Judge for Miami County where he presided from 1994-2003. Following his formal retirement from the Bench he continued serving as a Visiting Judge.
He was a member of the St. Boniface Catholic Church, the Miami County Bar Association, an active member of the Archbishop McNicholas Council #3344 of the Knights of Columbus in Piqua, and a charter member of the Hemloch Sporting Association. As an avid outdoorsman, he engaged in the sports of hunting, sporting clays, target shooting and fishing having enjoyed many excursions in pursuit of those passions.
He will be remembered for his diligence in fairness of his legal counsel, and as presiding Judge. Additionally, his generous spirit of sharing with others, encouraging appreciation of our environment, and enjoying many friends will not soon be forgotten.
A service to honor his life will begin at 10:00 am Wednesday June 25, 2014 at the Jamieson & Yannucci Funeral Home with Rev. Kazy Blocher Hinds and Judge Jeffrey Welbaum co-officiating.
Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 pm Tuesday at the funeral home where a Knights of Columbus service will be conducted at 7:00 pm.
