David Waterman Obituary

Published by The Daily News (Longview, WA) on May 2, 2007.
David John Waterman unexpectedly passed away in the early morning hours of Saturday, April 28, 2007 in Kelso. He was born September 28, 1942 in Des Moines, Iowa to Raymond and Anna Mae Waterman. David was a devoted husband, loving father, and grandfather who brought humor, music and intelligence to all the lives he touched. Living a "real" life was his goal. David was an active and accomplished Hamm Radio Operator (W7FGD). He loved to travel, garden and was an avid orchid grower. He acted with the Cascade Players for many years. He was a published author in various magazines from Hamm Radio to game publications. In 1956 he became the youngest Eagle Scout in Portland, OR. In his college years David was a professional musician with the RF Trio. He was gifted with all string instruments as well as song writing and vocal abilities, playing most recently with a local group. David was proud to serve as a firefighter for the city of Kelso for many years. During this time he met and married the love of his life, Donna and joined her in operating the House of Plants on Commerce in Longview. He worked for Columbia Ford for several years, then at the Crawford House as the administrator with his most recent years of employment at Somerset where he retired but continued as a volunteer.

He is preceded in death by his father, Raymond John Waterman. David is survived by his beautiful wife, Donna; his mother, Anna Mae Waterman of Hood River, OR; a sister, Susan Hartford of Hood River, OR; four daughters, Jessica Waterman-Baker of Longview, Stacey Waterman-Hoey of Olympia, Sarah Beth Waterman of Longview and Meredith Castro of Kelso; former wife, Linda (Noseda) Waterman of Kelso; 2 step-sons, Kirk Addicks of Snohomish, WA and Chief Petty Officer Joseph Addicks of Everett, WA; one niece, Jillian Cadwell of Bolder, CO; 8 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

At David's wishes, no formal service will be held. There will be a viewing on May 2, from 10-5 at Dahl-McVicker Funeral Home. The family will be available from 11-1.

Just learned of David's passing last night, from a friend visiting from the mainland. With tears and smiles I remember what a talented and loving man David was. It was my privilege to have him as part of the production team for "States of the Nation" and "Musical Memories", musical variety shows sponsored by Cascade Players. He helped plan scenes, secured props and performed in the shows. Donna and the girls helped with the box office and ushering. The world is a better place and our lives greatly enriched by having had David as a part of our lives. My love and prayers to you all.

Dear Donna, I worked with Dave at The crawford House. I would talk to him about my interest in "the other side" and he told me a story once about how a Lady bug had rode on the windsheild of your car during a long trip you two were on and how you guys had thought your sister, who collected Lady bugs and was passed away, had sent you the Lady bug to keep you safe on your trip. And as it turned out the Lady bug prevented your car from being in a serious accident on the highway. I hope you find this story comforting and I truly believe Dave is with your sister and the Lady bugs on "the other side" watching over the rest of us to keep us safe. And I have to add that he truly adored you and his family. God bless you

I just wanted to share that as Dave's sister, I couldn't have asked for a better brother. During and since the memorial for Dave, I have heard it mentioned several times how very kind and gentle a man he was. I couldn't agree more. Such a warm, caring, loving brother and father. We were so fortunate to have him in our lives for the time that we did.

He was so special - to each of us. I was especially proud of his life choices, his priorities. Losing this gentle giant will be really tough for those of you who were ever in contact with him. My thoughts are with you.

Dear family, I am so sorry for your loss. I went to school with, and was a close friend to Sarah. I remember all her "Dad Stories". Although I only met him a few times I always liked him. He was a very sweet man.

I will never forget one time being in the same room with both he and Sarah, and he started to laugh about something and then she started laughing. Then I thought, "Oh...that's where she got that crazy laugh!"

You are all in my thoughts and prayers. I am truly sorry.

Thank You for these wonderful thoughts you all have shared. We are saddened at the lost of our dad. The night he passed away, all four of us daughters were in New Orleans, LA. with our Aunt Sue "my Dad's Sister". God must have wanted us all to be together. Which does not happen often. Dad and Donna had made a cherished trip to the South a few years ago and Dad was thrilled that we were all going. I picked up Jumbalya, dirty rice, and pickled okra for him. I will miss my Dad I loved him so much and knew he loved me. Please feel free to contact me with any memories you would like remembered!! Goodbye Dad... for now. Love your oldest Daughter Jessica and Tom

DONNA, EVERYBODY AT THE OFFICE HAS BEEN A IN STATE OF SHOCK SINCE LEARNING OF DAVID'S PASSING. HE SEEMED SO HAPPY AND HEALTHY.

AS YOU KNOW, WE MEDICAL WORKERS LOSE MANY, MANY FRIENDS OVER THE YEARS, AND ALTHOUGH IT IS TRAGIC WHEN THE PERSON IS YOUNG LIKE DAVID, IT IS SOMETIMES WORSE WHEN THE MAN OR WOMAN HAS DETERIORATED FOR 20 YEARS AND WINDS UP SENILE AND LIVING IN A NURSING HOME.

WE WILL MISS DAVID'S UPBEAT, POSITIVE NATURE.

I will always remember Mr.Waterman and his family. As a teenager I lived across the street on East Terrace Way and use to babysit his four Beautiful daughters. He was always a kind and gentle man. I recently ran into him at the Dollar Tree. He was surprised that I remembered him after all these years. I told him he hadn't changed. We shared a few memories. He was just beaming with pride when he updated me on the girls. He was very proud of what wonderful young ladies they have become!!!When we left the store my husband said He remember meeting Mr.Waterman through Cascade Players. Boy what a small world! I will miss his wonderful Smile. I send my thoughts and prayers to all of the family.

Donna, and family, I feel great sadness learning of David's passing. We were often on the same shift at the fire dept. He was one of the most upbeat, kind, and gentle human I have ever met. You get to know a lot about a person when you face emergencies as a team. I share your sorrow.
