Emily Rumrill Obituary

Emily I. (Coffin) and Edward I. Rumrill

Sturbridge, MA/ Concord, NH - Emily I. (Coffin) Rumrill, 94, died Saturday, July 26, 2014 at her home in Sturbridge, MA. Her husband, Edward I. Rumrill, 91, died September 11, 2010. They are survived by their daughter Gail I. Palmer and her husband Bruce H. Palmer of Sturbridge and two grandchildren; Katherine I. Palmer and Jonathan H. Palmer both of Waltham, MA.

Mrs. Rumrill was born in Stoneham, MA, the daughter of the (late) Ina May (Wooster) and Sumner Coffin. Emily was a graduate of Malden High School and Melrose Hospital School of Nursing. She worked as a Registered Nurse for many years in various hospitals and was the Office Manager for the Monmouth Council of Girl Scouts, Monmouth, N.J. until her retirement. Emily was a birdwatcher, an avid reader and loved solving the daily crossword and "Jumble" puzzles.

Mr. Rumrill was born Malden, MA, the son of the (late) Bertha T. (Hoyt) and Samuel I. Rumrill. He graduated from Malden High School and Northeastern University. During WWII he was assigned to toxic gas testing for the United States Army Chemical Corps. He worked as a Chemical Engineer for over 25 years for DuPont, retiring in 1979. Edward never met a motor he didn't like and spent most of his retirement fixing and refurbishing old engines, boats and tractors.

Married for over 67 years they spent most of their retirement in New Hampshire, where they were former members of the Smith Memorial Congregational Church in Hillsboro, NH. Emily and Edward enjoyed traveling and cruises with friends and family; watching their grandchildren grow up and a good Dry Manhattan before dinner. Both Emily and Edward have donated their bodies to the Tufts University School of Medicine's Anatomical Gift Program.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in their memory can be made to the two agencies that gave them so much comfort and compassion during their final days. Heritage Home Health Care, P.O. Box 88, Sturbridge, MA 01566 or Guardian Hospice, 419 Main St., Box 4, Sturbridge, MA 01566.
